Day Resource Center for the Homeless

Star-Telegram reporter Jeff Guinn became homeless on a summer day in 1997, and the week he spent living on the streets brought Fort Worth to a turning point.

His harrowing, personal story of street life was published on June 8, 1997 and revealed critical gaps in help for the homeless: there were no shelters open during the day, no escape from heat or cold, no rest, no access to bathrooms, to laundry, showers and other services homeless men and women need to escape life on the street.

Fort Worth took an unflinching look at the human experience of homelessness and responded, opening the Day Resource Center in 1999.

Today the Day Resource Center is the turning point, a central source of life-changing care for more than 4,000 people a year, as many as 600 a day.

From showers, storage, laundry, and mail to individual case management, health screenings, job search and housing assistance, the Day Resource Center works to make homelessness a season of life, not a way of life.
